Residency 2015-2017

In 2015-2017 the Edinburgh International Festival was in a three year partnership with Castlebrae Community High School and City of Edinburgh Council, with the ambitious aim of supporting the improvement of the school.

During that time, pupils from all year groups at the school, located in the Craigmillar area of Edinburgh, have been learning about all aspects of the International Festival through workshops, bespoke mentoring and work experience programmes. These have highlighted the varied professional skillsets required in the delivery of events such as the International Festival and included a specially developed Festivals & Events Management module which contributes towards pupils National 5 qualification in ‘Creative Industries’.

The project was supported by James and Morag Anderson and The Robertson Trust.

Workshops and projects
In 2015, the pupils undertook our Art of Listening and Soul Boxes programmes as well as dance and performance skills workshops throughout the Spring and Summer terms. A number of art students contributed to the guerrilla knitting project that culminated in a quirky and colourful exhibition at The Hub over the 2015 International Festival period.

Every single pupil and staff member at the school has been involved in the From Castlebrae With Love film project. You can watch the finished film below:

In December 2016, Boy Blue Entertainment introduced the school pupils to their dynamic style of hip-hop dance at the workshops at Castlebrae Community High School.

The special relationship between the school and the International Festival has further developed in 2016 with a start of work experience opportunities for many of the senior students. They worked with the whole International Festival and Hub team on how to run a world class event, including one-to-one mentoring. The students had an opportunity to further develop their new skills through work experience in August 2017 when the school gym hall was transformed into an International Festival venue for Boy Blue Entertainment's Project R.E.B.E.L.

The residency concluded in December 2017 with the opening of the Castlebrae Portrait Project 2015-2017, a permanent installation of photographic portraits which is a lasting legacy of the International Festival’s relationship with the school.
