Reflections
on Syria

Sunday 13 August 2017
The Studio

A rare opportunity to experience work created in the most challenging of contexts.

Six years into a complex conflict, artists from Syria present their stories and memories through film, music and theatre, taking us beyond the headlines and offering fresh perspectives on how war is affecting Syrian lives.

The event includes short films created by the country’s new generation of filmmakers, introduced by award-winning director Yasmin Fedda, stirring new compositions performed by classical musician Maya Youssef, alongside a discussion with eminent theatre director Rafat Alzakout, chaired by broadcaster and journalist Bidisha.

Films include the short animation The Border by Nohad Halabi, the documentary film The Wait by Mohammad Masalmeh, Mohammad Abdallah Masalmeh and Mohamed Nour, and the short fiction film Besieged Bread by Soudade Kadaan.

In collaboration with Shubbak, the UK’s largest festival of contemporary Arab culture
